Our story
Pop In The Doll Shop was born out of the life lessons of a global pandemic sprung upon us, disruption to the European Union, and draws upon the experience of the founders of almost a decade in doll retail (at My Doll Best Friend).
Undeniably dolls are objects of beauty, works of artists, and being surrounded by this uplifting beauty and art benefits the health of minds, and a healthy mind improves our overall well-being.
At Pop In The Doll Shop we believe that we get so much more benefit out of dolls as a toy, or hobby, than the visual appeal.
We have learned more than ever in the recent past that we do in our homes really matters; it is the place we learn, the place we work, the place we relax. The home as a centre for family but also for learning, coping, living. What we bring into our homes is valuable for our well-being and development, and we are really interested in the psychological benefit of doll play for all.
Pop In The Doll Shop is situated in the European Union, specifically with warehousing in the Netherlands for cost-effective, easy and speedy delivery of orders to all EU customers.
We use the Dutch word ‘pop’ meaning ‘doll’ in English bringing a double meaning to the name. Seeing ‘pop’ on the diagonal in the vertical logo is intentional. If you’re familiar with the pen and paper game Tic-Tac-Toe also known as Noughts & Crosses, then the vertical column of noughts will look familiar, as a winning line. Why are these associations deliberate and significant to Pop In The Doll Shop’s message?
People readily accept that skills required for games are strategy, tactics, observation, pattern recognition, problem solving, language learning and more. Doll play is seen as developing nurturing skills and often dumbed down as having little modern value to the development of a child-of-tomorrow in a tech-led world.
This in itself is an old-fashioned view since it has been scientifically proven that areas of the brain responsible for social information processing and empathy are activated during doll play, even when playing with dolls alone. The rehearsing and performing of scenarios are skills that encourage children to think about other people, leading to better lifetime social interactions, and much more.
We believe strongly in the value of doll play and its ability to develop social intelligence. Many people have heard of Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, but many people do not know he majored in Psychology at Harvard, alongside attending computer science classes. In creating Facebook, he brought together knowledge of human behaviour with the technology that he’s famous for. One would not have succeeded without the other.
